So, I figured it would be easiest for me to share photos of my classroom via the blog.

I am teaching an AVID class this year (and for the next four), so I wanted to display some pennants. Maybe your alma mater is in our collection. I wrote many colleges asking for pennant donations, and I had a decent response rate! My wife made a couple of things on here Cricut, and I have to add a couple more touches, but it's nearly complete! :) Let me know what you think!
After this, we began to dive into the Tutorial Process. The tutorial is a major component of AVID (approximately 40%), as the typical schedule requires AVID tutorials two days a week. There are ten parts to the tutorial process, which is in the photo below. There is pre-work, in the form of a Tutorial Request Form (TRF), where students have to fill out to identify points of confusion. There was a ton of information in this section, so it's still hard to digest. However, AVID provides a ton of resources on tutorials.
Day 3 was also chock-full-of information. We discussed philosophical chairs, which are a form of a debate, but with different rules. After philosophical chairs, we combined learning about the Critical Reading process and Socratic Seminars. After this, we discussed setting up the AVID binder and did wrap up to finish. We had another meeting after this before the conference was over, and we had to fly home late that night. Overall, it was an amazing conference, and I have so much to take back to school here in a few weeks, not just for my AVID elective, but for my Algebra 2 and Geometry classes.
As I stated in a previous post, I am going to be teaching a section of our AVID elective for (at least) the next four years. As the final step in being able to teach the AVID elective, I had to go to SI for training.
We had two half days and a 3/4 day training to teach us strategies and expectations for teaching the AVID elective.

I have just now got time (or had the mental energy) to be able to process all of the information that was given. Let's go through it.

Day 1
We discussed the importance of relational capacity, which is a fancy term for building community and relationships within your class. We did a license plate icebreaker, which helped us to get to know other people in the room. My AVID elective teacher partner (the teacher who is teaching the other section of AVID 9) are planning on tying this activity with the infamous Sara VanDerWerf name tents. If you haven't seen these, go check them out!

Then we dived straight into WICOR, which is an acronym for AVID teaching strategies. The picture below will define WICOR.

Then we started our section on Focused Note-Taking, which includes five phases for taking notes: Taking Notes, Processing Notes, Connecting Thinking, Summarizing/Reflecting on notes, and, finally, Applying notes. For more information, google the 5 states of note taking and AVID. I did not have time to take a picture of the slides on this part. We then went through and modeled the steps as a group.

After focused note taking, a student panel was brought in of local kids who were in AVID, and then we got to talk to some of the kids and talk about AVID and how it had made a positive impact on their lives. After this, we did a collaboration (the C in WICOR) activity which led into an introduction to the tutorial process, which was day 2.

I also forgot to mention WICOR partners. You give students a sheet with WICOR on it. Then you play music and when the music stops, the person closest to you puts their name on your sheet. The first person would be your W partner. Then the process repeats for ICOR. So, this is a cool way to do partners! As a teacher, you can say "Get with your W partner" or "Get with your O partner. Students would need to file this in a binder or INB.Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-63205420730036320782019-05-10T17:35:00.002-04:002019-05-12T16:45:21.512-04:00My 10% for the 2019-2020 School Year It is that time of year where testing is over, and we have just a few weeks left until school is out. It's also the time where I start thinking about planning for the next school year. When I went to Twitter Math Camp in 2016, one of our keynote speakers, Dylan Kane, discussed the rule of 10%. He talked about how teachers should change 10% of their practice every year. He also added a caveat which stated that it is unreasonable for teachers to try to change more than 10% each year because if we as teachers try to change more than 10% each year, we will tend to get overwhelmed and not be successful. Conversely, we should not change less because it is very important that we do this to be more effective for our students.

Here is my list for my 10% for the next school year.

AVID
I am teaching an AVID 9th grade elective class, so this will be a new prep for me. I will have lots to learn and implement. I want to start my class by building community and setting that college ready mindset from day 1. I am pumped and ready to start decorating my room.

Geometry Interactive Notebooks
I have used interactive notebooks in my geometry classes in previous years, but I didn't use an INB this year. I have really missed it, so I am looking forward to getting some INBs in for Geometry next year. We have been doing notes on OneNote this year, and I have really liked it because it cuts down on paper. However, I have had a few kids who haven't had styluses; therefore, it has been hard in some ways. With that being said, I still LOVE OneNote!

Cell Phones
Cell phones have killed me this year. I plan on being way more strict with cell phones. If I see a cell phone, they will be required to turn it in. I just have to be consistent with it!

Kagan
I went to two days of Kagan Structures training last year, and I want to do a better job of integrating Kagan Structures into my instruction and having the individual accountability, which I find to be lacking when we do group work.

Visible Random Grouping (VRG)
I am wanting to try VRG from Day 1 because it will give different kids the opportunity to work together. However, I haven't decided if I want to do weekly or daily. I am willing to listen to advice.

Tech Tools
I am taking an online class on integrating Google Tools with Lynda Moore, who has some great ideas. I want to implement some of the things I have learned in this class, such as drag and drops and review menus.

Bathroom
I really want to start to flesh out a bathroom policy that doesn't make my classroom a revolving door. I also really want to limit how many times a week a kid can go. Some kids take advantage of me almost daily. I am going to start having kids turn in their cell phone in order to be able to go to the bathroom. I would also love to have some conversations on this as well.

CHAMPS
Earlier in the school year, one of my colleagues/friends presented on behavior expectations, using the acronym CHAMPS. Champs stands for
Conversation
Help
Activity
Movement
Participation
Success

I want to implement this to help with some classroom management issues and to create more structure.

Let me know what you think! Maybe we are thinking of some of the same ideas! Here is my 10% post in the 2016-17 school year. I think I have grown since then, so that is good!Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-31680144434835988852019-05-09T18:36:00.004-04:002019-05-09T18:36:36.232-04:00Big Announcement!!This will be a very short post. Last July, I took a temporary (interim) position at the high school in the town where I live. I really wanted the opportunity to be able to be hired permanently. The teacher who I was filling in for this year resigned, therefore creating an opening. I applied for the opening, interviewed, and on Tuesday, my principal officially offered me the job! I am ecstatic! Also, I am going to be teaching AVID 9 (an elective with our AVID program), and I am so pumped! So, now I can relax and enjoy the school year without the fear that I am going to be unemployed. Less than 4 weeks left. WOW!Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-80380204606046868052019-05-09T18:35:00.001-04:002019-05-09T18:35:56.129-04:00Teacher Appreciation WeekThis week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and I just wanted to take a moment to reflect. Here are some of the "warm fuzzies" that I got this week. Furthermore, I took advantage of the free sandwiches at Arby's and Chick-Fil-A as well as free tea at McAlister's.
We have just wrapped up testing, and I have had a couple of other activities that have given me an outlet to channel some energy.

The first of these is rowing. I signed up and took an Intro to Rowing class for the month of April. The town I live in has a rowing association, and people come from around the country for our rowing venue. I often walk here with my wife and dog, and I saw a flyer for introduction to rowing, which I decided to sign up for because I have always wanted to learn to row. I really enjoyed the class, and, although I would definitely not call myself an athletic person, I am not necessarily horrible at it. I definitely have a long way to go and always have more to learn and improve, but I definitely felt like I grew as a result of the class.

I had the opportunity to learn about how to use the erg (rowing machine), and we got on the water during most class sessions, so I have really enjoyed that! I started out not being able to handle the oar and row properly to getting a decent grasp of the rowing sequence. I am hoping that I can continue.

Another new experience was directing a sketch for our school's annual Sketch Night. I picked a sketch from a selection I was giving, and we had auditions where every student got a role, and the directors picked who was best for their sketches. We had around 4-5 lunch and after school rehearsals. My wife was nervous for me, but she said it was a great job. My kids rocked it!

On another note, today was math testing day. So here's hoping my kids did a great job!Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-39754364414883732162018-10-29T17:41:00.001-04:002018-10-29T17:41:33.237-04:00One Stray Group Activity for Geometric Proof During our Geometry PLC meeting on Thursday, one of the group members was discussing an activity called One Stray that he had learned at a conference the week before. I remember learning about this activity during Kagan trainings I went to in February and June. So, I went to my Kagan book and looked up the strategy, and sure enough, I had learned about this.

We had discussed doing this for practice for Geometric Proof, and I thought I would give it a try. We used a Proof Practice assignment that I got from the amazing Elissa Miller. (If you haven't checked out her blog/resources, do so when you are finished here). I gave three minutes to work on the proofs, then stray and form new groups. After new groups were formed, I gave one minute to discuss the previous proof with the new groups before assiging the next proof. We are on 49 minute periods, so I was able to get through 5 proofs in one class and 6 in the other.

Here are the directions that I used for the activity. I took the majority of these from Kagan.

Be sure you are in
groups of 4.

Each group will be
given a mat. This mat will determine your number.

All members of the
group will take 3 minutes to collectively work on Proof #1

When I call time, we
are going to do One Stray

Directions for One
Stray

I will randomly call a number
and call "STRAY"

The student who has the
number I call will stand up. The remaining teammates remain seated but
raise their hands

Standing students stray to a
team that has their hands up

Teams lower their hands when
a new team member joins them.

Students work in new teams to
gather and share information.

I used the Google Random Number Generator for group numbers to rotate. I used my Kagan Mats that I made to determine group numbers. If you would like a copy of my Kagan Mat, please email me I also used the Google timer tool to manage the time. I also had the students complete their work in OneNote, which we use as our notebook. Also, I had students swap computers and check each other's work and highlight errors and circle unmarked diagrams (which I have been trying to reinforce consistently).

Overall, I think that the activity was successful! I think the kids learned and benefitted from it, especially since geometric proof can be very tricky.
Then it hit me. I needed something that was essentially self-checking. So, I decided that we could take pictures of the answers and problems and have the kids access them through QR codes.

I went into my coworker's room, who is our PLC leader and one of three of us Algebra 2 CP teachers. She loved the idea. Then we went out into the hall, and we saw our other Algebra 2 CP teacher, and we called him over as told him that we were going to make QR codes so that the kids could check their work, and he liked that idea as well.

I struggled with making them and was about to scrap the idea because it was short notice after all. Then my coworker said she knew how to make the QR codes on Google Docs, and she had it done in just a few minutes. She had an Add-On called Koodid Barcodes. Then she took the pictures of the problems I sent her and saved it to our shared Google Drive, so the kids were able to access it.

Here is the example. See if it works! I should've taken pictures of students working, but I got too sidetracked with that, notebook checks for Algebra 2, as well as projects in my Geometry classes.

Let me tell you about my growing pains, first. I had some issues setting up the notebooks to link with the students, but, thankfully my teammates helped me out. Our school is a Canvas school, and there is a tab that students can use to link their notebook with the class notebook. The only major issue that I had with that is that I messed it up and created three notebooks for my math intervention class. However thanks to a Google Search, I figured this out. Also, I learned pretty quickly that my students knew more about it than I did, but, sometimes that humility in the classroom is an invaluable piece.

Now I will get to the good stuff. It's been a God send. I have been using it as our class notebook in my Geometry classes. Therefore, I don't require my students to have a notebook, and I send the majority of the practice and notes through OneNote, and they can write or type in their OneNote notebooks. If I have students practice, they can export their work to Canvas, and I can grade it from there. Goodbye copies!

Here are my top 5 uses for OneNote
1. Warm-Ups

I do my daily Warm-Ups in OneNote, and the kids turn them in on Fridays.

2. Class Practice

Instead of making copies of worksheets, I just upload to OneNote to each kid's notebook.

3. Organizational Skills

It helps the kids be more organized, although, this is a work in progress.

4. Notes

I do all of my notes on OneNote. I just insert the PDF files into OneNote and distribute to students.

5. Projects

We have a separate tab for Projects, and I can have kids either work on projects or send information for projects. Did I mention I can do rubrics in each kid's notebook and grade them there?!

Let me know your experiences with OneNote, and I hope to improve with OneNote as time goes on.

I tweeted to Sam and decided to take the challenge.

As you may (or may have not seen) I have accepted a new position and am teaching in the town where I live! So, I wanted to wait until school was in for a couple of weeks to fully answer the prompt.

This is my seventh year teaching mathematics, and I have been fortunate to have some varied teaching experienced. I taught one year in the Mississippi Delta in a pretty tough school through Teach for America, four years in a small, rural high school in east Tenneseee, and one year in an urban school in east Tennessee. Now, I am teaching at a high school of about 1400 students in a suburb in east Tennessee.

When I was a student in elementary school through college, something that was lacking was my confidence in math. I always tried to compare myself to other classmates, and I would always think that I "sucked at math." I always was on an honors track in school, although we didn't have honors math classes where I went to high school. I took Algebra I in 8th grade, Algebra II in 9th grade, and etc. By the time I got to pre-calculus in my junior year, I had definitely become a helpless hand raiser. However, my teacher, Mrs. Owens, always encouraged me to increase my confidence in math, and she helped me to see that I was in fact a math person (just like every one else).

So, forgive my little personal story there, but it set the foundation that one of my guiding principles is to help students increase their confidence in mathematics. I try to design my lessons in a way that will help increase understanding in mathematics, even if ever so slightly. One way I design my lessons is that I try to see the potential in every kid and try to make connections to previous content and building blocks. I always say that if I helped a kid increase their confidence in mathematics, that I must be doing something right.

I am an avid fan of using technology in the classroom, and sometimes kids aren't used to this. At one of my previous schools, we became 1:1 when I was there, and I was one of the leaders in this project. I was so amazed in how tech helped students become better learners, helped increase retention, and helped test scores. So, I try to integrate tech wherever I can. At the school I was at last year, I shared a cart with another teacher, and she was a more than gracious host, so I had it a decent amount of time. At my new school, the kids have Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, so we will be using them most days! With awesome tools, such as Desmos (which I am pretty sure kids think I own stock in Desmos), Edulastic, Pear Deck, Quizizz, Kahoot, Plickers, and many more that I can't think of at the current moment. Kids are able to engage with math in ways that we haven't been able to in the past, and, as a result, they are able to see math as more dynamic and not just some problems on a worksheet or textbook.

I read Mathematical Mindsets a couple of years, and I totally bought in to the concept of mistakes are valuable. I posted Jo Boaler's math norms in the front of my classroom that following August, and they go up every year! One of the main norms I focus on is that our mistakes are valuable, and we use them to learn! Most kids buy in to this, and I really try to sell it. I even had one group one year do a choral response to "Mistakes are...valuable!" I have personally seen and experienced the power of showing kids that their mistakes are valuable. It causes students to look more closely at their mistakes, and often seeing in the process, that the majority of their mistakes are small. I also found a poster at the Bullseye playground at Target that says "Mistakes are proof that you are trying," thus further cementing the idea that mistakes are valuable and an important part of doing and learning mathematics.

Overall, I feel like these are the "flavors" that are served each and every day in my classroom with my students. As far as what math is or what math feels like, I feel that some of the methods I have are unorthodox, but my goal is a math teacher is to open the eyes of my students to see the beauty and depth of math. I try to convey the message that everyone can do math, but they have to put their mind to it and work hard! I also try to plan my lessons with the fact in mind that I want math to be accessible and approachable. Therefore, my main ideals to move the needle in math is to set up an environment where confidence is increased, technology is a key of what we do, and knowing that mistakes are valuable and people won't be ridiculed or made fun of based on mistakes.Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-71894266985577269812018-08-06T16:17:00.002-04:002018-08-06T16:17:20.424-04:00Week 1 Down! It's hard to believe that one week of school has came and went. I have to say that it was a great first week! I felt like relationships were getting built and content was being mastered. I also felt myself getting back into the groove.

One interesting thing for me is getting used to a new schedule. We have 49 minute periods, and I have never taught on short periods in seven years, and I haven't had short periods since I graduated high school in 2007. Since it was the first week, we were on an assembly schedule one day and for two days we were on early release schedule. One day a week, the kids go home an hour and a half early and we do PD after school, so my classes were 38 minutes this day. I would be up teaching and think we have five minutes left. Then the bell rang. So I was like "Okay, we will finish tomorrow." It's been a nice adjustment to 90 minute block and 70 minute periods.

I am really happy at my new school, and everyone has been friendly and accommodating! I am a part of two PLCs, and that is nice! The school is a Microsoft school, so I have been getting used to (a.k.a having the kids show me) how to use tools such as OneNote and switching the computer between regular mode and tablet mode. Also, kids are still having to remind me to unfreeze the screen, and you think I would have learned after basically six years.

So, here's been my week. In Algebra 2, we spent the first day setting up Canvas, OneNote, Delta Math, and other technologies. On Tuesday, we spent the majority of the time reviewing and simplifying radicals. Wednesday was for adding and subtracting radical expressions, and I taught multiplying radicals on Thursday. I created an Edulastic assignment for practice on adding, subtracting, and multiplying radicals. In Geometry, we also spent the first day setting up Canvas, OneNote, DeltaMath, and other stuff. We dug into points, lines, and planes as well as some segment addition. We also talked about complementary, supplementary, and vertical angles.

So, let's get week 2 started!Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-6897513283082410262018-07-29T18:14:00.001-04:002018-07-29T18:14:20.897-04:002018-2019 Classroom! Now that I am getting somewhat settled in, I figured it was time to show off a few pics of my new classroom!!! In case you haven't heard, I have a new teaching job.
I have seven groups set up, and the buckets are filled with supplies that students might need for that day. I got the bucket idea from a couple of teachers in my department. I put the following in my buckets: colored pencils, pencils, highlighters, index cards, erasers, pencil sharpeners. When we use whiteboards, I will put the erasers and markers in there. Also, I will put in handouts, INB pages, etc. Beside the buckets are the infamous Name Tents from Sara Vanderwerf.

It's been a while since I've blogged, and I hope to do more blogging this year!

Anyways, I have a big announcement! I am returning to teach high school next week! I applied for and accepted a position at the high school in my town!! I am so excited! The school is three minutes from my house, so that will be nice! The school also has a really good reputation, so I am excited to be on a staff of great math teachers!

The specific classes are to be determined, but it seems I will be teaching geometry (and maybe a couple of other classes)!

I have enjoyed my time teaching middle school, but this was simply an opportunity I couldn't pass up!

Pics of my new classroom will be coming soon!Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-87558901637289298772018-05-02T20:03:00.001-04:002018-05-02T20:03:24.074-04:00An Unexpected Review Game (still thinking of a name)! I was thinking of a good idea to use as a review for my students' last module test. I went through the MTBoS and (as many awesome ideas that are out there), nothing was speaking to me. I was sitting at my desk yesterday afternoon and had a cool idea. How about I create a game that is similar to trivia?

Recently, my fiancƩ, a few other teachers at my school and their significant others, and I have been doing trivia one night a week at a local restaurant. I thought that the format of our weekly trivia game would be a good class format.

Here's how it is set up.

Give students many pieces of scrap paper or index cards (as this is what they will bring to you with their answers)

Do three questions per round. I started the first round with 1, 3, or 5 points. I also stated that they could only pick one point per individual question.

For example, if the chose 5 points for the first question in the round, they had to choose 1 or 3 for the next question.

Preview the questions for the students, doing approximately 15-30 seconds (at most) per question so that way students can decide in their teams how many points they want to make each question.

Give students a set amount of time to do questions. Students must put their team name, the amount of points they want to set for the question, as well as the answer. As a side note, I didn't let them lose points for getting questions wrong. If students did not get their answers to me by the time the timer went off, then they were ineligible to submit their answer.

In the next round (if you want), you can up the points. I did 2, 4, 6 for a couple of rounds then 3, 6, 9 for a couple of rounds.

At the end, I did a final question. Students could bet anywhere between 1-20 points for this question. However, students lost the number of points they wagered if they got it wrong.

Overall, I think my kids enjoyed it, and I would totally do it again! However, I need a better name than just Trivia. If you have any ideas, I will listen!

For a few months, I had been reading about this game called Ghosts in the Graveyard, which is a math review game that has went around the Math Twitter Blogosphere. I first heard about it from Sarah Carter's blog (which is a must read), and she posted the link to the original game. I had seen others talk about playing, and I had an epiphany (if you could call it that) to do something similar. With this being December, I though that Ornaments in the Tree might be a great idea. I had seen other variations, depending on the time of year, such as Turkeys in the Oven, Snowflakes in the Sky, etc...from other great minds in the MTBoS.

So, after school I drew Christmas trees (which are probably some of my better artwork to be honest, sadly) and put them on the whiteboards (VNPS) in the classroom. I also used some chart paper.

Here were the rules and procedures I established. Also, I created a recording sheet, which you can find here. Two of my classes really enjoyed it, but one class I had a few behavior issues out of, so I might have to restructure. One tip I would suggest is that when you calculate points at the end, do it yourself. I think I had a couple of students try to move some of their ornaments (and a couple of kids accused each other of cheating).

Anyways, here's how I did it.

I cut up some questions, and I randomly gave to students. Students got unlimited tries on a question. When they got the question correct, I gave them an ornament to hang on a tree of their choice. I made it clear at the beginning of the game that the points will be determined at the end. When I did this part, I made sure I did it with my back to the board so no one would accuse me of cheating (yes, this has happened before with other games).

I found some questions on systems of equations (which was the unit we were on and just finished), cut them up and used those as my questions. I also found some ornament clip art, and made a sheet (which you can find here) and cut them up. I made about 20 copies of this, and this was enough for three classes (around 90 kids).

The only issues I had were some kids not wanting to work or wanting to give up on problems. I might restructure it differently, but if you have ideas, let me know.

Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945659797416012129.post-78270763532840602562017-12-02T15:26:00.003-05:002017-12-02T15:26:52.045-05:00Choice Day I went to a session on personalized learning at our district inservice a few weeks ago. (I work in a really large district, so all of the math teachers get together a couple of times a year for inservice). I really liked some of the ideas that the presenters (who are teachers in my district) had about personalized learning and giving some students choices in taking ownership of their learning. I took some detailed notes, but I was still curious about the execution of the project.

I was thinking about some idea to jazz up practice instead of some basic worksheet or something (which remind me, I had another idea I could've used). Then it dawned on me. Why don't I make a Choice Day for the kids and let them choose what to work on that day.

The first topic that I did this for was Systems of Equations with Graphing, which many students had struggled with. We had spent four days on the topic, and I knew that they wanted something different. Our district uses Canvas, so I found five videos on the topic and made a playlist. I had students watch two videos and take notes. Then they either had to do a Quizizz, Edulastic assignment, or worksheet as practice. The first choice day went well, but there wasn't enough to ensure accountability.

After some reflection, I decided to do choice day again with systems of equations by substitution, which is another difficult topic. I created another Canvas playlist, but this time, I had students only watch one video. Then I had four options for students: Quizizz, Delta Math, Prodigy (which is a free math practice website that is game-like), or Edulastic. I figured most would play Prodigy, but many chose the other options. I also required an exit ticket at the end of the class to help with the accountability piece. I also let students sit with whomever they wanted (as long as they were working).

I still want to work on improving the accountability piece and trying to make sure I act more as a facilitator instead of having kids rely so much on me. I would recommend Choice Day! It's not a whole lot of extra prep, and it's still manageable. Plus, it allows kids to feel like they have some choice in their learning. If you ever have questions about Choice Day, please let me know. If you do or try something similar to Choice Day, I would love to chat.

I got this idea from another teacher in my district, and when I came across the activity, I thought it would be perfect for my 8th grade Honors Algebra I kids.

We did a task in class relating to functions, and then, I had students create their own tasks. I want to share a few of them with you. I assigned this as homework and had the students turn in their tasks the next week. I didn't use a set rubric for this project. I just asked that they create the task and leave a blank copy. Then students had to work out and create the answer key for their task. I hope to use some of these in my classes next year! Enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions!
I am happy to say that we were off for the solar eclipse yesterday, so we traveled about an hour and a half to see the totality. We live just outside of where the line of totality was, so we wanted the full effect. School was closed for several reasons. We are a large district, and we were (and did) expect a large influx of traffic because of the eclipse. Also, the elementary schools in our district dismiss around the time of the expected eclipse.

Anyways, here are some pics! Let me just add that these were taken around 2:30 P.M. Right around the time of the totality, the cicadas started chirping (thinking it was nighttime), and the streetlights came on. Then it was sunny five minutes later.
Last Monday was our first day of school and with students. For those of you who don't know, I am at a new school and am teaching 8th grade (and middle school) for the first time.

Monday

Monday was a half day, so we had our homeroom (which is our second <strike>block</strike> period). Then we had a half hour with our middle two classes, and had an hour of class with our last group. During this time, we did an Estimation 180 task, I introduced myself, and I went over some basic procedures for entering the classroom.

Tuesday:

We spent the class period going over the school wide procedures and expectations. We are lucky that our school has laid out very clear expectations for what behavior is expected. We also did a Getting to Know You Bingo activity (shared here).

Wednesday:

We finished the procedures and expectations for this day for the classroom. I also taught the departure procedure for the school.

Thursday:

Time to do some math!

In pre-algebra, we started by classifying rational and irrational numbers. I had the students make a foldable. I gave the students a half sheet of paper, and students folded the paper in half to make a booklet. One one side, I had students write the word "rational" and "irrational" on the other side. I then gave students their Cornell Notes. We are an AVID School of Distinction, and, as a result, we use Cornell Notes in our classes. I gave students several numbers throughout the lesson, and students had to classify them as rational or irrational.

In Algebra I, we started with one and two-step equations review. I also showed students the Cloud Method for solving equations. If you have any questions about what the Cloud Method looks like, just feel to contact or tweet me.

I also gave my first homework assignment, the math autobiography.

Friday:

We had an assembly for most of my first class, so I just let them work on their math autobiographies after we returned. I then did a review game with my other pre-algebra classes on classifying rational and irrational numbers. After the game, I gave them some time to work on their math autobiographies.

All week, we did the Name Tents from Sara Vanderwerf, which are a blessing and a great way to build relationships and get to know your kids. I also started a routine where I have students fist bump me on the way into class. I have a few that won't do it, but hopefully they will come around someday. However, I can understand at the same time.

So, here's to week one in the books. It is my wish that Week 2 brings more positive relationship building and some fun lessons!

I presented four sessions, which I will describe below. I also have links for all of the sessions for your perusal. The irony is that I presented four sessions, and there were only four sessions for the day, so I didn't get to go to anything. :(

How Twitter Transformed My Teaching

This was my first session, and I had around eleven participants. Unfortunately, I didn't have any math teachers, but that was okay. I talked about how Twitter has had such a positive impact and influence on my teaching career. I gave strategies on signing up for Twitter, connecting with people, Twitter etiquette, and how it, in fact, transformed my teaching.

Why Blog? Why Not?

This sesiĆ³n had only three people, two of whom were in my first session. I was pretty chill while presenting, and I showed them my blog to begin the session. I also showed how to use Blogger as a blogging platform. I then talked about why I blog and how blogging has been a nice tool of reflection.

Desmos Activity Builder

I was excited that I had thirteen people in the session, and only one had even used Desmos AB before the session. I also was glad that I had a mixture of math teachers and non-math teachers. We talked about the features of Desmos AB, such as graphing, multiple choice, sketching, anonymize, class pause, teacher pacing, input/fill in the blank, marble slides, and Polygraph. We had to go very fast during this session, and I probably should've done it as a longer session.

Plickers, Quizzizz, and Kahoot! Oh My!

In this session, we did a crash course on Plickers, Quizzizz, and Kahoot. I wasn't able to print Plickers cards, so we didn't get to go full course on that. However, we talked about the pros and cons of each tool. Then I created a Quizzizz and Kahoot with very basic questions so that participants could experience the differences.

Overall, I think that the presentations went well. Maybe I should've snapped a few pics! If you have any questions about my sessions, just let me know!

For our final week and project, my students created End of the Year projects. I took the idea from Miss Rudolph's blog entry from a few years ago. I used her rubric and her directions, so I won't blather on about the details. I also gave my students a lot of choice when deciding what to do for their project. I was really excited what my students came up with and created.

I first met Annie when she came to my session at Twitter Math Camp (TMC) 2016 in Minneapolis. Then she shared this project with me. I sort of take my own spin on it, though.

I typed up my list of names, of which I got many of the names from Annie's blog. Then I added some that were available in the Desmos AB anonymize list. Then I let students choose their own mathematician and create a Google Slide about it. I had students create their own Google Slide presentations, but this semester, I made all of the students put their slides on one large Google Slide presentation. I created the basic presentation and did an example slide, and I changed the features to "students can edit file" in Google Classroom and let them work. For the most part, it worked really well. I had to threaten students who were messing with other peoples' slides. Then that issue stopped.

My students learned some interesting facts about their mathematicians (and so did I)! The next day, I made the students present their findings to their classmates and to me.

Here is the rubric, and here is the list of mathematicians.

If you have any questions about how we did this project, please do not hesitate to contact me. Also, I would also recommend checking out Annie's blog (as she is the expert here).Jonathan Schoolcrafthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465744000185670168noreply@blogger.com0
